Qualifying Conditions for a Medical Marijuana Card in Georgia (2026)
Georgia’s medical marijuana access is currently limited to low-THC cannabis oil (up to 5% THC) under the Low THC Oil Registry, administered by the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH). While recreational cannabis remains illegal, patients with qualifying conditions can legally obtain low-THC oil after going through a physician certification and state registration process.
Qualifying Medical Conditions
As of 2025, Georgia recognizes the following 17 qualifying conditions for the Low THC Oil program:
- AIDS (severe or end-stage)
- Alzheimer’s disease (severe or end-stage)
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (severe or end-stage)
- Autism (severe, for patients 18 years or older)
- Cancer
- Crohn’s disease
- Epidermolysis bullosa
- Intractable pain
- Mitochondrial disease
- Multiple sclerosis (MS)
- Parkinson’s disease
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD, for patients at least 18 years old)
- Sickle cell disease
- Seizure disorders
- Tourette syndrome
- Hospice patients
Eligibility Requirements
- Be a legal resident of Georgia
- Be 18 years or older or be a legal guardian/caregiver applying for a minor patient
- Have a certified diagnosis of a qualifying condition by a licensed Georgia physician registered to recommend low-THC oil
Application Process
- Consult a Registered Physician: Schedule an evaluation with a Georgia-licensed doctor registered to recommend low-THC oil. If you qualify, the physician will complete a Low THC Oil Waiver (signed & notarized) and a Certification form.
- Physician Submits Forms: The physician submits the completed waiver and certification forms to the Georgia Department of Public Health’s Low THC Oil Registry.
- Pay the Application Fee: After approval, you or your caregiver pay the fee through the secured portal or by money order.
- Receive Your Card: The Low THC Oil Registry card is shipped by UPS to your residential address; you must be available to sign for it.
- Purchase Medical Cannabis Oil: Cardholders are legally allowed to buy low-THC cannabis oil from licensed pharmacies and dispensaries in Georgia.
Important Notes
Georgia’s program currently limits medical cannabis to low-THC oil products containing less than 5% THC. Raw cannabis flower and inhaled products are not permitted. Legislative efforts to expand the program, including raising THC limits and allowing vaping, were underway in 2025 but not yet enacted.
